I eat buns very often, and I always forget to take pictures in order to make an article about them. Usually I think about it right after taking my first bite and I’m always like, “oh never mind I’ll do it next time”. But this time I resisted my hunger for you dear readers (ok just for one minute but still…).
So, buns, or Mantous, are typical Chinese dumpling made of steamed bread. They are stuffed with all sorts of ingredients, salty or sugary. Originally, buns form part of the basic alimentation of North China where wheat, rather than rice, is grown. However, it is now eaten in the South too, even though not exactly in the same way. Indeed, In the South buns are eaten nearly exclusively as street food.
Actually this is exactly the way I ate them too. There is a shop just down my block, and at 9AM when I go to work the shop is always packed with Chinese waiting for their breakfast. I also have to specify that I always go to the same place, Babi Mantou, because they are the only ones who have the ingredients written in English too. You should see me trying to point out the ones I want, it usually take two minutes for them to understand…but this is life in China :).
Here are the buns I took this time
